All at Tappy Toes are warmly invited to come and help catch a big one on November 5th!
My name’s Stuart Hancock, and I composed the original music for the 2016 half-hour animated TV special of We’re Going On A Bear Hunt. It first broadcast on Christmas Eve and, with 8 million tuning in, earned Channel 4 its biggest audience that year.
The music is a lyrical, pastoral orchestral score that follows the siblings on their quest to find the elusive bear. Underscoring their famous chant (“we’re going to catch a big one, what a beautiful day, I’m not scared…!”) and enhancing their emotions and excitement.
Recording
I originally recorded it at Abbey Road Studios with the magnificent City of London Sinfonia and London Youth Choir. I conducted the first in-concert performances in 2019 with live orchestra accompanying the film. It’s now coming back to London with performances on Saturday November 5th in London’s West End.
But it’s more than just the film! We’ll be a doing a lively, interactive introduction beforehand. I'll show you the orchestra and the individual instruments, as well as introducing melodies to listen out for in the music – little motifs that help tell the Bear Hunt story. And we’ll have a practise of singing along to George Ezra’s lovely Toe-Tapping end titles theme song “Me & You” which will round off the performance in its full length, orchestrated version.
Live Orchestra
If the little ones have not experienced a live orchestra before, it will be something pretty thrilling! It certainly won’t be a stuffy classical concert… It’ll be a lovely tie-in with the splendid work at Tappy Toes – an inspiring blend of rhythm and melody and a beautiful, heart-warming film.
And… who knows… there may even be a very special appearance from The Bear himself…!
Poppy Appeal
And all this, taking place at the heart of the annual period of Remembrance, is a fund-raiser for the Royal British Legion’s London Poppy Appeal. With the orchestra being formed of Army musicians in their ceremonial uniforms: the Band of the Welsh Guards and the Countess of Wessex’s String Orchestra. It’s the orchestra you may have seen performing so spectacularly at the Platinum Party at the Palace in June.
